It knows that last year just over 3,000 people died in September 11 attacks. But last year, heart disease killed well over 725,000 Americans. Cancer exterminated another 550,000 Americans. Obesity-related deaths carted off 280,000 to 325,000. Stroke killed around 166,000. Chronic lower respiratory disease dragged away another 123,000. Diabetes knocked off 67,000. Pneumonia/influenza seized 67,000. Alzheimer's sealed the fate - and minds - of 49,000. The Immortalist Society understands this fact: it is a certainty that you are going to die from one of the top ten killer diseases. Despite shrill Vatican condemnations, 75% of Americans support in vitro fertilization. The Vatican is the gangleader when it comes to attacking stem-cell research to cure Parkinson´s and other terrible neurological diseases, when it comes to therapeutic cloning. The Death Ideology The powers that be have a great attraction to Death. Are You Living in a Death Society? First and foremost, in a Death Society, most deaths are unnecessary or premature. Since our maximum human lifespan is 120 years, anyone who dies before 100 dies prematurely. It is a scandal that the average lifespan in the U.S. is only 76, and its average HealthSpan (the healthy life expectancy) only 70, behind most of Europe, Scandinavia, Japan, and Australia. [World Health Organization (WHO) June 2000 Report] For the richest country on the planet, with the most advanced science, medicine, and technology at its command, the average lifespan and HealthSpan should be much higher. The American Death Society - even in its longest economic boom, even when wallowing in budget surpluses - refuses to give its people universal health insurance. It is the nature of the Death Society that, in its "best" years, well over 40 million Americans ò including 10 million of its children - are without health insurance. This is incomprehensible except in light of The Death Ideology. The United States, the wealthiest nation in history, ranks 37th in health care, behind Japan, behind Western Europe, behind Scandinavia, behind Canada, and even behind some Middle Eastern countries. This scandalous state of affairs is confirmed by a new WHO study. The U.S. achieves this dubious distinction despite spending more on h ealth care per capita ($3,700) than any country in the world. "Welfare states" like Sweden and France, much-maligned in the U.S. media, have more efficient health care systems than the U.S., the worldçs evangelist of efficiency. They spend less of their GNP on health care and get more bang for the buck than the U.S. While the top 10% of Americans get the best health care, the bottom 10% get health care like sub-Saharan Africaçs, and the rest, the big middle-class, get only mediocre health care. It is an unnecessary and unacceptable situation. Most deaths from obesity, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, malaria, AIDS, pneumonia are preventable, premature, unnecessary. It is the nature of a Death Society that it has the scientific, health-care and societal resources to minimize or even eliminate most of its top killer diseases - but, for ideological reasons, refuses to. (The United States is the most egregious example.) Another characteristic of the Death Society: Suicide is rampant and glorified, whether it be "Romeo and Juliet," Marilyn Monroe, or Kurt Cobain, or Jack Kevorkian and the Euthanasia movement which is now legally enshrined in Oregon. An Immortalist Society will not prosecute someone who wants take his own life, but we condemn the legal enthronement and societal glamorization of suicide.
